We also consulted various expert sources for Sargassum algae forecasts for 2022 and 2023.

While there's never a guarantee that you won't find Sargassum seaweed, these beaches should be a good place to start when planning a Caribbean beach vacation during seaweed season.

Sargassum seaweed in 2021 and 2022

The world's largest algal bloom, known as the Great Atlantic Sargasso Belt, now stretches 8,850 kilometers from West Africa to the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, according to the journal Science.

And while there used to be an identifiable kelp season from May to December, sargassum kelp arrives earlier, stays longer, and kelp beds are larger.

This increases the likelihood of encountering unsightly brown algae on a Caribbean vacation.

CorrespondentUniversity of South Florida'sOutlook for Sargassum Blooms in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico (known as (SaWS), Sargassum algae levels in the central Atlantic can generally be predicted in December of each year.

Parts of the Caribbean experienced strong sargassum inflows in 2018, 2019, and much of 2022.

The Caribbean islands that have historically been the most affected by the Sargassum seaweed include certain coastlines in Barbados, tobago, Guadalupe,Dominican RepublicmiMartinique.

However, it is important to note that even on islands affected by the influx of Sargassum algae, there are often completely clear beaches on the island itself.

For example, when Playa del Carmen in mainland Mexico experienced a severe sargassum problem in 2022, the leeward beaches of Isla Mujeres and Cozumel were free of algae.

While there are no guarantees, if you're planning a beach vacation and looking for seaweed-free Caribbean islands and seaweed-free Caribbean beaches, here are some destinations to consider:

1. Great Anse in St. Louis. Georges, Grenada - a seaweed-free Caribbean beach
