Current images, updated regularly
Most Google Earth imagery was acquired within the past three years, and Google continually updates the imagery for different parts of the world. Large cities generally have newer and higher resolution images than sparsely populated areas.
There is a misconception among some people that the images displayed in the Google Earth program are updated live directly from the satellites. This is not the case. Images are acquired from satellites, processed by commercial imagery providers or government agencies, and then updated in batches to the Google Earth imagery database.
However, Google and its image providers have the ability to quickly integrate new images into the program. This sometimes happens in emergency situations, for example when an area has been hit by a natural disaster and the new footage would be a valuable aid to the rescue and relief effort.

Google Earth was originally called "Earth Viewer 3D". It was developed by Keyhole, Inc., a company funded by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The software was developed as a "land finding" program, and that's exactly what it does.
Google bought Keyhole in 2004 and with that acquisition got Earth Viewer 3D, which they improved and distributed to the public for free starting in 2005. Get your free copy of Google Earth via the blue button below.
